The best first date while travelling is short, public and easy to extend if it goes well. It should leave room for conversation and make it simple for either of you to leave politely. Here are ideas that work in most cities, and how to choose between them.
Easy starts
These keep the first meeting light. An hour is enough to know whether you want more.
- Coffee in a busy central café, then a short walk.
- An aperitivo or early drink at a terrace bar.
- A viewpoint at sunset, followed by a drink nearby.
- A food market at lunchtime: you choose a few things to share.
Something to do together
A shared activity takes the pressure off conversation and shows how you get on.
- A museum or gallery you both want to see, with coffee in its café.
- A self-guided walk through an old town.
- A small-group cooking class or wine tasting.
- A concert or jazz bar, meeting for a drink before the show.
Better for a second date
Some plans are lovely but better once you know each other: long hikes, boat trips, day trips to another town, or anything that depends on the other person for getting back. On a first date, keep your own way home.
How to choose
Pick something you would enjoy even if the date is only so-so. Check opening hours and the weather. Suggest one clear plan with a time and a public place rather than asking “what do you want to do?”, and be ready to adjust. Agree on who pays, or simply offer to split.
