Meeting someone new: a safety checklist

A clear checklist for meeting someone from a dating app in a public place, at home or abroad: before, during and after the date.

Most first dates are simply pleasant. A few habits make sure they stay that way and give you an easy way out if something feels wrong. None of this is about suspicion; it is about keeping control of your own evening.

Before you meet

A short check before the date saves trouble later.

  • Talk on the platform first; be careful with anyone who rushes you to another app.
  • Look for the Photo match checked badge and a consistent story.
  • Choose a busy public place and a time of day you are comfortable with.
  • Tell a friend where you will be, with whom, and when you expect to be back.
  • Plan your own transport there and back.

During the date

Stay in charge of the basics.

  • Keep your drink with you and your phone charged.
  • Do not share where you are staying or your full address.
  • Do not lend or send money, whatever the story.
  • If you feel uncomfortable, leave. You do not owe anyone an explanation.

After the date

Let your friend know you are fine. If the other person was disrespectful, pushy or asked for money, use the report and block tools. Reports are reviewed by people and the other person is not told who reported them.

If you are ever in immediate danger, call the local emergency number first. In the European Union, 112 works in every member country.

What CHEOLO does

Photos are reviewed before other members see them. Contact opens only when both people agree. Blocking ends all contact at once, including any plans you made together. Photo match checks help, but no check can rule out every fake account or prove who someone is, so these habits still matter.
