Travel puts you in new places with time to spare and an open mind, which is a good starting point for meeting someone. It also means you are away from your friends, your usual routines and sometimes your language. A little planning keeps the good part and removes most of the risk.

Timing: plan before you arrive

If you only start looking once you land, you may spend your best days chatting instead of meeting. Publishing your dates or the experiences you want before the trip gives you time to see who else will be there, exchange a few messages, and agree on a relaxed first meeting.

Leave space in your schedule. A first date squeezed between a museum and a late train is stressful for both of you.

Language and culture

Shared languages make a first meeting easier, but they are not everything. Ask about local habits instead of assuming them: when people usually eat, whether splitting the bill is normal, how direct people tend to be. Curiosity about someone's home is a good conversation in itself.

Be honest about the situation

Say how long you are staying and what you hope for. If you leave in three days, say so. If you are open to staying in touch, say that too. Honesty protects both people and usually makes the time you have more relaxed.

Safety in an unfamiliar place

You do not know the neighbourhoods, the late-night transport or the local emergency number as well as at home. Look them up before you go out.

  • Save the local emergency number and the address of your accommodation, but do not share the address with a new date.
  • Meet in central, busy places you can easily leave.
  • Keep your phone charged and your own way home planned.
  • Share your plan and the person's profile with a friend.
  • Trust your instinct. Leaving early is always allowed.

Afterwards

If it went well, say so and suggest a next step that fits your remaining days. If it did not, a short, kind message is enough. If anything made you feel unsafe, report it. Reports are confidential and help keep other members safe.
