The clearest warning sign is pressure

Travel and dating are both emotionally engaging. That combination can make people unusually generous or willing to trust a new connection. A scammer may exploit that feeling by inventing a missed flight, urgent medical bill, stolen wallet, visa issue or last-minute hotel problem. You do not need to prove that the story is false before protecting yourself. Decline payment requests from unfamiliar contacts.

Romance scams often depend on moving a conversation quickly toward money or personal information. The person may seem attentive for weeks, but the request for a transfer is the moment when the risk becomes concrete.

Red flag 1 — An emergency only you can solve

Someone says they're stranded and needs a transfer immediately. The story may be emotional and detailed, but you have little reliable way to check it. Suggest that they contact their airline, bank, embassy, insurer or local authorities as appropriate. Do not become their emergency payment method.

Red flag 2 — Payment outside a secure booking process

A new contact claims to have access to a special travel deal and asks you to pay a personal account, gift-card code or cryptocurrency wallet. Verify any accommodation or experience directly with a reputable provider. CHEOLO member trip posts are not merchant invoices or travel-package offers issued by CHEOLO.

Red flag 3 — A rushed move off-platform

There are ordinary reasons people may prefer another messaging service, but repeated pressure to leave before you've built trust can reduce reporting options and make it easier for the person to disappear. Stay on the platform while you're getting to know someone and avoid sharing more personal details than necessary.

Red flag 4 — A dramatic but inconsistent identity story

Photos, social profiles and video can be manipulated. Be alert to inconsistent biographical details, contradictions in dates and attempts to discourage reasonable questions. A sophisticated real-time deepfake is possible, so even a video call is not proof of legal identity. No online badge should be treated as a background check.

Red flag 5 — Requests for identity documents

A person doesn't need a photo of your passport, residence permit or bank card to agree to a public coffee. Travel reservations often include names, confirmation numbers and dates that can expose more than you expect. Share those only with legitimate providers when actually needed.

Red flag 6 — Disrespect for boundaries

Pressure to meet alone, book shared lodging, send intimate photographs, keep a conversation secret or ignore your comfort can signal risk even without a request for money. Dating depends on consent. A “no” is complete information, not the start of a negotiation.

What to do if you suspect fraud

Stop sending money or sensitive information. Save lawful evidence such as messages and transaction references. Block or report the account through the platform. If a payment has been made, contact the bank or payment provider immediately about possible recovery and consider reporting the incident to law enforcement. If there is immediate physical danger, leave and contact local emergency services.

What about a false alarm?

Being cautious doesn't mean accusing someone publicly. You can simply decline a request or choose not to meet. Use private reporting channels to share concerns with the moderation team. The service should investigate reports fairly rather than automatically treating every allegation as proof.

Healthy travel connections don't need your money

A genuine potential date can respect your preferences, accept an independent meeting plan and allow you to make your own decisions. Start with shared interests, communicate honestly and keep financial arrangements separate from romance.
